Battlefield 2042 Officially Announced With An Explosive Reveal Prior To Gameplay Debut At E3

The beloved Battlefield franchise is set to return to its all-out warfare roots with Battlefield 2042 which was recently announced on June 9th, 2021 during a livestream on the official Battlefield YouTube channel. The Official Reveal Trailer clocks in at a heart-pounding 5 minutes which offers players a first look at the story and direction for the upcoming title which is set in a (near) modern day world that pitches a “what if” scenario as societies begin to crumble in the face of extreme climate change and the depletion of valuable resources. Development is being handled by Dice, Criterion, Dice LA, and EA Gothenburg with Frostbite Engine allowing for an impressive 128 players per match.

The announcement was confirmed via the PlayStation Blog from Gillen McAllister, Senior Specialist, Content Communications, SIE as well as Will Tuttle, Sr. Communications Manager, Xbox via the Xbox Wire with some additional details about what fans can expect in this latest entry as the Battlefield series itself is gearing up to celebrate an explosive 20th anniversary later this year.

Players will see a world in Battlefield 2042 that is on edge – with food shortages, exhausted energy, and a clean water crisis that has resulted in the fall of dozens of once thriving nations; creating the greatest refugee crisis that the world has ever seen. Those refugees are known as Non-Patriated or No-Pats and consist of families, farmers, engineers, and soldiers alike with the United States and Russia responsible for fueling an all-out war with No-Pat Specialists fighting for their own nations as well as a seat at the table. The premise is dangerously close to what the world is currently facing (climate change) but far enough away to include advanced weaponry, equipment, and systems.

The Battlefield 2042 experience will consist of three gameplay pillars including: All Out Warfare, Hazard Zone, and an unnamed third mode which is currently being developed at DICE LA with more information and reveals coming at a later date. Dice is also reinforcing to players that Hazard Zone is a high-stakes, squad-based multiplayer mode which is NEW to the franchise while empathetically stressing that it is NOT a Battle Royale mode in any way, shape, or form.

All Out Warfare consists of two gameplay modes – Conquest & Breakthrough – which each provide their own unique set of rules and challenges for players to master. Conquest features a large scale battlefield and more personal frays throughout pockets across the map while Breakthrough features similar mechanics but with the addition of multiple capture points and a map that is divided into sectors. The Attacking and Defending sides must continue to hold various capture points in order to flip them over and secure a victory with players having the opportunity to launch BOTH modes with Artificial Intelligence (AI) squadmates in order to get a feel for things prior to jumping into a multiplayer match with more experienced and veteran Battlefield players – which can be very daunting.

Each gameplay mode will also feature dynamic weather patterns, dangerous environmental hazards, and jaw-dropping world events that will influence both strategy and movement within a match. For instance, tornadoes will destructively tear through a map and send debris hurtling through the air while sandstorms will temporarily block out the Sun and limit visibility. World Events such as rocket launches, lowering/raising bridges, and the ability to lock down cranes are all designed to keep players on their toes and think about their next move while being hyper-aware of their surroundings.

The All Out Warfare experience for Battlefield 2042 will launch with seven maps with varying degrees of strategy for players to tackle and deploy their squads in the most strategic locations possible for the surest chance of dominance and victory including:

  • Kaleidoscope (Sogdo, South Korea)
  • Manifest (Brani Island, Singapore)
  • Orbital (Kourou, French Guiana)
  • Discarded (Alang, India)
  • Renewal (Eastern Desert, Egypt)
  • Hourglass (Doha, Qatar)
  • Breakaway (Queen Maud Land, Antarctica)

Players will be able to take control of SpecialistsBattlefield 2042 character types – that are equipped with their own unique Specialities and Traits. Specialities include items like the Grappling Hook which can be used to quick zip to higher locations, the OV-P Recon Drone which can be piloted to pinpoint targets, and the S21 Syrette Pistol which fires health viles to teammates and get them back into the fight. Traits include being Nimble which allows players to move more quickly whilst aiming down sights and Combat Surgeon which allows players to fully revive their downed allies. Specialists can also be customized with loadouts to match whatever the player desires, giving them the freedom to explore the world of Battlefield 2042 however they choose.

Moving forward, players that pre-order Battlefield 2042 on their platform of choice will receive early access to the game via an Open Beta which will be announced at a later date and Dice confirms that post launch, players can look forward to four seasons worth of content including four NEW Specialists and locations; Battle Pass format will encompass each season with locations being accessible to all players regardless of whether or not they purchase the Battle Pass.

Battlefield 2042 will also make an appearance at the upcoming E3 2021 Digital Event on June 13th, 2021 with an exclusive Gameplay Reveal.

Battlefield 2042 is scheduled to release on October 22nd, 2021 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC via the Steam, Origin, and Epic Games clients.
