Hogwarts Legacy Invites Players To Explore A World Filled With Ancient Magic And A Dangerous Mystery

The wizarding world of Harry Potter is turning back time with Hogwarts Legacy as players are set to be transported to the previously unexplored 1800’s where they will have the opportunity to chronicle their own stories and discover plenty of spells, secrets, and magical beasts in the process. The upcoming title is being developed by Avalanche Software and published by Portkey Games – the official label owned by Warner Bros. Games that is attached and dedicated to gaming experiences within the spellbinding walls of J.K. Rowling’s iconic universe. Portkey Games has worked on Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite respectively – released on iOS and Android devices – the latter having recently shutting down its operations for undisclosed reasons. It was likely because of stiff competition from other Niantic titles including Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Transformers: Heavy Metal which is currently in early access to players in New Zealand and the Philippines at this present time.

Players were treated to an extended look at gameplay and cinematics from Hogwarts Legacy during the recent PlayStation State of Play presentation which was held on March 17th, 2022 with over 20 minutes of character introductions, spell casting mechanics, and developer commentaries. At the conclusion of the provided footage, there is no doubt that Hogwarts Legacy is a passion project for the development team as Chandler Wood, Community Manager, WB Games Avalanche has stated emphatically over on the PlayStation Blog that they have dreamt of receiving their letters, attending Hogwarts, and forging a legacy of their own. She goes on to say that “as Wizarding World fans, we’ve [always] wondered what it would be like for our stories to be found between the pages of a book, because that magic-filled world has always felt close to our own… we couldn’t be more excited that [the game] is finally here.”

The Hogwarts Legacy experience is carefully crafted and centered around the story of the player with wizarding world lore that readers and fans of the blockbuster films have come to know, deeply rooted throughout the game. Players will have the opportunity to participate in hundreds of magical moments including attending the Sorting Hat ceremony in the Great Hall to be sorted into one of their favourite Hogwarts Houses – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin – as well as impersonating other students by brewing Polyjuice Potions, encountering Hungarian Horntails, and more! Iconic locations such as the Hogsmeade, the Clocktower, and Hospital Wing will be instantly recognizable with players able to fully explore Hogwarts in its entirety – secrets to discover and mysteries to unravel.

The first Harry Potter novel – Philosopher’s Stone – has been in circulation for over twenty years and those that have had their nose buried inside the captivating pages have undoubtedly constructed some version of Hogwarts in their minds. Boston Madsen, Hogwarts Environmental Lead explains that while this layout of the school is quite unique to the Hogwarts Legacy game, its overall design unequivocally “feels like the magical school I’ve always wanted to attend” with extracurricular activities ranging from avoiding Peeves the Poltergeist to perusing the Restricted Section of the library. Madsen says that “life at Hogwarts is as much about finding secret chambers [or] sneaking into the Prefects’ Bathroom as it is learning to cast spells and brew potions” and those things are what makes it inherently special for the player to experience – Hogwarts Legacy embraces feelings of both familiarity and discovery.

While the Gryffindor and Slytherin Common Rooms were visited on several occasions throughout the course of the films, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw were subsequently left out, leaving fans to imagine for themselves what they looked like based on descriptions from the books… until now. Hogwarts Legacy will be introducing players to these cozy and airy locations for the first time as well as those beyond the confines of Hogwarts from Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forest to magnificent and picturesque areas stretching across the Scottish Highlands. The developers were insistent on presenting the players with a world that balanced the lines of being authentic to the source material (books and films) yet different enough to ensure a fun and unforgettable experience was maintained throughout the game.

Players will take on the role of an – at this time – unnamed student that has transferred to Hogwarts at the beginning of their fifth school year; abnormal and definitely out of the ordinary to say the least but the reasoning behind its importance shall become clearer as the story progresses. A robust character customization will allow players to create their own unique witch or wizard with selectable options like hair style, skin tones, facial structure, and more. Those students who might be nervous about not being placed in their favourite or preferred House need not worry as players will have total control over that important decision – the Sorting Hat always takes their choice into consideration as well.

While much of the story is locked up tighter than a vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank, a couple pieces of tantalizing information have been disclosed by Moira Squier, Narrative Lead who has confirmed that the student has mysterious and unknown ties to an ancient magic which puts them on a direct collision course with Ranrok – a formidable goblin in the midst of a rebellion, aided in his cause by a Dark wizard called Victor Rookwood; both of which are NEW to the series. Squier mentions that once Ranrok claims what he is fighting for with his rebellion: “no one will be able to stop him and [thus] the wizarding world will be doomed” – his hatred of wizards is what motivates him to perform these tasks.

Players will earn the opportunity to gain the upper hand against Ranrok and his forces by keeping up with their studies and participating in lessons from iconic classes including Charms, Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Care of Magical Creatures just to name a few. There are a variety of spells to learn which can turn the tide of any battle – Accio, Incendio, Petrificus Totalus – with a wide range of difficulty options to allow players to experience the game in whatever manner suits their particular play style. Hogwarts Legacy is strictly a single-player open-world action RPG (role playing game) which also means that attending classes with friends or exploring Hogwarts in general will not be possibly as the game is about the legacy of each player; NPC (non-player character) will serve as co-op partner.

Hogwarts Legacy is scheduled to launch Holiday 2022 and will release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 Pro, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Windows PC.
