Sony Announces That Next Iteration Of PlayStation VR Is Currently In Development For PlayStation 5

Sony confirmed on February 23rd, 2021 via the PlayStation Blog that the next generation of VR gaming on PlayStation is currently being developed exclusively for PlayStation 5 with no indication as to when players could expect to get their hands on it. PlayStation VR first launched back in October 2016 and offered a new and transformative way to play games by providing players with a stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion within their favourite game worlds. Experiences like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard have helped drive the popularity of the hardware which has sold over 5 million units to date with Sony continuing to enhance several PS VR titles to ensure that they perform at their very best on both PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 5 consoles.

Sony has remained fully committed to bringing immersive gaming experiences to the PlayStation community with games like Star Wars: Squadrons and Marvel’s Iron Man VR which gives players the opportunity to put on their virtual helmets and get closer to the action than ever before. And with the release date of After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity on the horizon, there are even more things to be excited about with the current iteration of the hardware and Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management confirms that the next-generation of VR gaming coming exclusively to PlayStation 5 will feature dramatic leaps in both performance and interactivity that will facilitate a high-fidelity visual experience.

The PlayStation 5 iteration of PlayStation VR is being developed with technological advancements that will improve resolution, field of view, tracking, and input with a single cord used to connect it to PS5 consoles to help simplify setup and improve ease-of-use within each individual gaming environment. Nishino also revealed that one of the innovations that Sony is bringing to the unnamed project is an updated VR controller that will incorporate some of the key features that are currently found in the DualSense Wireless controller for PS5 with a greater focus on ergonomic design and functionality. While no other details have been announced at this time, it has been confirmed that the next-generation of PlayStation VR will not release in 2021 so players should be prepared to wait several years before getting their hands on the hardware.

PlayStation VR is available now exclusively for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro and is compatible on PlayStation 5 with supported titles.
