Xbox Design Lab Returns With New Customization Options For Xbox Series X|S Controllers
The wait is finally over as the doors to the Xbox Design Lab have been officially reopened after temporarily closing down the service on October 14th, 2020 in order to prepare for the launch of the Xbox Series X|S consoles. Speaking with Parris Lilly during the Xbox Games Showcase Extended on June 17th, 2021 via the Xbox Twitch and YouTube channels, Navin Kumar, Director of Product Marketing, Xbox confirmed the news and provided some additional details on what players can expect with this latest iteration of the service.
Xbox Design Lab is a controller customization service available on Xbox.com that allows players the opportunity to choose any colour combination that they want for their Xbox Series X|S controller and make it their own. Whether the design is based off of a favourite video game character, professional sports teams, or even a personal hobby or interest – the possibilities are endless and players that are unsure of where to begin can choose from pre-selected colour combinations and modify them accordingly to find the perfect controller that is unique and personal to them.
For most parts on the controllers, players will be able to choose from 18 different colours including Shock Blue, Pulse Red, and Electric Volt which are brand NEW options to the Xbox Design Lab service. Kumar also mentions that most of the colour options include post-consumer recycled resins in them such as automotive headlights and recycled water bottles which help make the controller a little more environmentally friendly. There are eight (8) areas for customizing including the Body, Back, Bumpers, Triggers, D-Pad, Thumbsticks, ABXY Buttons, and the View/Menu/Share Buttons with an extra option of adding an engraving for an additional cost; personalize it with an Xbox Gamertag.
There is also a NEW customization option for the ABXY Buttons which is a throwback to the original Xbox 360 controller with more customization options becoming available down the road; metallic colours, camo patterns, and gradients were all previously available in the Xbox Design Lab service and it is unknown as to whether or not those options will return in the future. Those looking to begin designing their own custom controllers can do so starting TODAY with shipping currently available to Canada, the United States, and most Western European countries.
Prices start at $69.99 CAD with engraving costing an additional $9.99 CAD that allows players to personalize their controller with a laser engraved message with up to 16 characters.
