Marvel’s Wolverine Makes Surprise Appearance At The PlayStation Showcase From Insomniac Games

Insomniac Games delivered another surprising announcement during the PlayStation Showcase on September 9th, 2021 when they revealed that they were also working on Marvel’s Wolverine in addition to the highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 adventure. Taking to the PlayStation Blog shortly after the announcement, Ryan Schneider – Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations, Insomniac Games explained that the idea to bring Wolverine into their established universe came up quite often as a way to think about the future beyond the friendly neighbourhood web-slingers.

Sony Interactive and Marvel were both deeply involved in those important discussions and after a couple of years passed, Insomniac Games came together and pitched a PlayStation 5 title featuring the iconic – and proudly Canadian – adamantium-clawed mutant himself with Schneider jokingly remarking that “since you just saw the teaser, we can confirm that the pitch [went] pretty well.”

Marvel’s Wolverine is a standalone adventure with Brian Horton, Creative Director and Cameron Christian, Game Director leading the development team after successfully guiding the creative efforts for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Mile Morales which launched on November 12th, 2020 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive launch title. Insomniac Games is respecting the DNA of the Wolverine character including what makes him one of the most popular superheroes in the Marvel universe as well as looking for opportunities to make him feel fresh and garner the true spirit of the studio.

Many of the Insomniac team are such huge fans of the character, and one of the key elements that drew us to him is surprisingly not that different from Spider-Man: Both heroes feel deeply compelled to defend people who are less able to do so.

Schneider concludes his PlayStation Blog entry by stating that the team is already crafting something that is remarkably special and that the narrative for Marvel’s Wolverine is quite emotional and features cutting-edge gameplay; an impressive and delightful pun.

Marvel’s Wolverine is currently in the very early stages of development and a release date has yet to be announced or confirmed.
