Sonic The Hedgehog Sequel Announces 2022 Release Date With Tails Along For The Adventure

Sonic the Hedgehog will officially be returning to the big screen in 2022 as Paramount Pictures has revealed the title and release date for the follow-up to the blockbuster 2020 film based on the best-selling video game franchise. Marketed as groundbreaking, thought provoking, and extremely obvious, the sequel will be called Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and will tentatively race into theatres on April 8th, 2022 which could ultimately change depending on the state of the pandemic next year; digital release is a viable option and has proven to be extremely profitable in the past year.

While little is known about the story or which cast members would be returning for the sequel, the logo itself should come as no surprise to those whom stayed for the credits of the original film. In a mid-credits scene, Tails, the two-tailed and longtime sidekick of Sonic, emerges from a Ring Portal on Earth and appears to have been tracking Sonic for an unknown reason, simply uttering “I found him. I just hope I’m not too late” before the credits begin to roll. Tails was once again voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey who has been portraying the character since 2014 and will likely reprise her role for the upcoming sequel.

Commercially, Sonic the Hedgehog was a commercial and critical success with fans praising Jim Carrey for his portrayal of Dr. Robotnik whom unequivocally stole the show, as well as Ben Schwartz for voicing the titular Sonic character which had been previously performed by Roger Craig Smith for the past 10 years. SEGA announced on January 28th, 2021 that Smith would be stepping down as the voice of Sonic – praising his never-ending enthusiasm for the character and helping spread joy to the community; an integral part of the SEGA family. Fans have since wondered whether Schwartz was being considered to voice the character moving forward although nothing has been officially announced.

Rumours have also been circulating that Knuckles the Echidna will be making an appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with Paramount reportedly offering the role to Jason Momoa but again, nothing has been confirmed.

Sonic the Hedgehog is available now on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, DVD, and Digital.
