PlayStation Celebrates 75th Anniversary Of Jackie Robinson Day With MLB The Show 22 Promotion
Jackie Robinson was a pioneer in the world of professional sports as he became the very first African American athlete to play Major League Baseball, subsequently breaking down the colour barriers which were present and in place at the time. Robinson was a trailblazer within the sports and media industry alongside being greatly involved in the civil rights movement. He proudly stood for class, the love and passion for baseball, in addition to equality – which helped turn him into a powerful force of positive change; shifting the attitudes and landscape of professional sports. Robinson officially signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15th, 1947 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 after an incredible 10 year career where he helped the Dodgers win the 1955 World Series championship.
Sony has partnered with the Jackie Robinson Foundation to honour the historic 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson Day – a celebration which started back in 2004 to honour Robinson when he first made headlines all those years ago; teams all wear a Number 42 jersey in his memory. Players can purchase an exclusive Jackie Robinson Foundation Pack for $6.49 CAD on any digital platform which currently sells MLB The Show 22 with 100% of the proceeds going to the Jackie Robinson Foundation to support the JRF/PlayStation-MLB The Show Scholars Program – helps reduce the achievement gap in higher education. PlayStation and San Diego Studio – developers of MLB The Show 22 – are also donating $1 for every Collector’s Edition of the game sold until December 31st, 2022 on all platforms.
The Jackie Robinson Foundation Pack awards players with 5,000 Stubs, the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) baseball bat skin, Jackie Robinson 75th Anniversary profile icon, and a #42 profile icon available for use in MLB The Show 22 – game sold separately. Players can tackle the Jackie Robinson Day Program for a limited time which gives them the opportunity to earn a Diamon Legend player for their Diamond Dynasty squad, a #42 baseball bat skin, socks, and a baseball bat grip for custom characters.
“We want to realize the power of education to generate economic wealth for communities of color and have more employees from underrepresented groups within Sony Interactive Entertainment. We couldn’t be happier to continue our partnership with the foundation and Jackie’s family as we strive to achieve these goals.”
Ramone Russell, Product Development Communications and Brand Strategist, San Diego Studio
On the PlayStation Blog earlier this month, Ramone Russell, Product Development Communications and Brand Strategist, San Diego Studio remarked that “Jackie Robinson played a pivotal role in societal change as a champion of racial equality and social justice.” Russell goes on to say “the Jackie Robinson Foundation continues that legacy as one of the best scholarship and leadership development programs for students from underrepresented groups for the past 50 years.”
